Our top art picks from the Rimon e-guide—February
Are you getting the Rimon e-guide? The monthly newsletter from our local Jewish arts organization and Federation partner drops the first week of every month with pages and pages of Jewish (or Jewish-adjacent) Twin Cities arts opportunities. In normal times, we love perusing this list for unique events out in the world—but art still thrives in the pandemic age, even if virtually!
We picked out five things that caught our eye this month, but you can visit the full e-guide here and subscribe here.
The Shapes We Take | Through February 14
For the last seven years Rachel Breen’s work has examined the labor rights of garment workers, a nexus for many challenges of capitalism- globalization, climate crisis, racism, and labor abuse. The Shapes We Take is yet another chapter in Breen’s commitment to making systems visible that are hard to comprehend and deeply entrenched. The work can be seen at Soo Visual Arts Center (2909 Bryant Ave S, Suite 101, Mpls).
Streaming: Gershwin! | February 27, 7 pm
The Dakota Jazz & Blues Club has gotten into the virtual concert business— Streaming: Gershwin! features local favorite Prudence Johnson singing classic songs of romp and romance.
Legends and Myths of Ancient Minnesota | Through May 30
The Weisman Art Museum presents this exhibition-in-print created by visual artist Brooks Turner. Utilizing archival documents from the Minnesota Historical Society and his own drawing and collage, Turner has created an aesthetic history of Fascism in Minnesota. Turner sees traces of these political movements in the present-day Twin Cities and beyond. FFI: https://wam.umn.edu/calendar/brooks-turner-legends-and-myths-of-ancient-minnesota/
Muddy Waters | Ongoing
The Sabes JCC hosts this virtual exhibit, featuring new work by over two dozen artists in the Jewish Artists’ Lab. Muddy Waters explores a wide array of pressing environmental issues using many art forms. The art comments on the current state of our planet, our responsibility to serve as activists, and how art plays a key role in making change.
